The impact and the lost civilisation are two different claims
The claim
A cosmic impact 12,900 years ago destroyed an advanced prehistoric civilisation, whose survivors seeded the cultures that followed.
Our verdict
RefutedThat sentence contains two claims welded together, and they have nothing to do with each other. One is a live geophysics controversy with peer-reviewed papers on both sides. The other is a claim about human societies with a completely separate and much thinner evidence base. Separating them is the most useful thing anyone can do here.
This is the single most useful distinction on this site, and almost nothing that discusses the subject makes it.
Proposition one
A cosmic impact or airburst around 12,900 years ago contributed to the Younger Dryas cooling and the megafaunal extinctions.
This is a geophysics claim. It is tested with sediment cores, platinum concentrations, magnetic microspherules and nanodiamonds. It is published in PNAS and in Earth-Science Reviews, argued by named academics on both sides, and it is unresolved. It has its own page.
Proposition two
An advanced civilisation existed before that date, was destroyed by the event, and its survivors transmitted knowledge to later cultures.
This is an archaeology claim. It would be tested with settlement evidence, material culture, subsistence remains, burials, tools. Not with sediment chemistry.
Why the welding matters
They can come apart in every direction, and here is the table nobody draws.

Four combinations, all coherent. Evidence for the impact is not evidence for the civilisation, because the impact evidence is chemistry in sediment and says nothing whatsoever about who lived where.
The inference from the first proposition to the second is invalid, and it is the load-bearing move in most popular retellings. It is refuted not by disproving either claim but by noticing they are not connected.
Structural. The 2007 Firestone paper and the 2021 to 2024 Earth-Science Reviews exchange concern geochemical markers and climate. None of them offers evidence of a prehistoric advanced society.
Who does the welding, and it is not only one side
Popular accounts weld them because the combined story is far better than either half. An impact on its own is a climate event. A lost civilisation on its own has no dramatic cause. Together they are a catastrophe with a moral.
And critics weld them too, in the opposite direction. Dismissing the impact hypothesis because it is associated with lost-civilisation claims is the same error running backwards, and it is common. Sweatman and Holliday are arguing about platinum, not about Atlantis.
