Accuracy

Every factual claim on this site carries a confidence label, and a source or a visible unverified mark. Those labels are the terms. A claim marked speculative is somebody else's claim under examination, and reporting it is not endorsing it. A claim marked unverified has not been traced to a source yet.

Nothing here is professional, legal, financial or archaeological advice. If you are planning fieldwork or a development, consult the relevant heritage authority.

Reuse of our text

Quote us. Short extracts with a link back are fine and need no permission. Reproducing whole pages is not. Ask first.

Reuse of data and images

Images derived from open datasets carry the dataset and licence in their caption. Where that licence permits reuse, the licence terms apply and attribution is required. Where no licence is stated, assume you need to ask.

Reporting finds

If our published work leads you to a site, do not dig. In England, report it to the county Historic Environment Record. Following the procedure is not a formality here, it is the thing this project is for.
